Empty Quarter Quicksands
An 8-day deep-desert adventure into the heart of the Rub' al Khali — navigating the legendary quicksand corridors, vast dune seas, and remote oasis camps of the world's largest continuous sand desert.
What to Expect
This expedition takes you into one of the most challenging and awe-inspiring environments on earth. The quicksand corridors of the Empty Quarter demand physical fitness, mental resilience, and a spirit of true adventure. Days are spent navigating shifting dune fields on foot and by 4x4, with nights under a canopy of stars at remote desert camps. No prior desert experience is required — our expert guides handle navigation and safety — but participants should be comfortable with long days of walking on soft sand, basic camping conditions, and the profound solitude of the deep desert.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrival in Muscat
Arrive in Muscat and transfer to your hotel. Evening briefing with your guide covering the route, equipment, and desert safety protocols. Welcome dinner with the group.
Muscat to Ibri — Gateway to the Desert
Drive west through the Hajar foothills to Ibri, the last major town before the deep desert. Visit the historic Ibri Fort and traditional souq. Camp on the desert edge as the dunes begin.
Into the Quicksands Corridor
Enter the legendary quicksand zone — a network of soft, unstable dune corridors that have swallowed caravans for centuries. Navigate on foot with your guide, learning to read the sand and move safely through shifting terrain. Camp deep in the corridor.
Dune Sea Crossing
A full day traversing the vast dune sea of the central Empty Quarter. Towering dunes up to 200 metres high surround you on all sides. 4x4 driving and trekking alternate as the terrain demands. Sunset from a high dune ridge.
Liwa Oasis & Ancient Caravan Routes
Reach the historic Liwa Oasis, a string of villages that sustained Bedouin caravans for millennia. Explore the oasis date palm groves, meet local families, and hear stories of the old caravan trade routes across the Rub' al Khali.
Ramlat Khaliya — The Red Sands
Journey into the Ramlat Khaliya, where the sand turns a deep rust-red at dawn and dusk. This remote section of the Empty Quarter sees almost no visitors. Wild camping in complete silence, with a sky full of stars.
Final Desert Camp & Celebration
A final day of exploration in the deep desert — dune climbing, sandboarding, and time to absorb the immensity of the landscape. Evening celebration dinner around the campfire with traditional Omani food and music.
Desert to Salalah — Departure
Morning drive south through the desert fringe to Salalah on the Arabian Sea coast. Farewell lunch before onward flights. Optional extension to explore Salalah's frankincense coast available on request.
